Abstract

Keywords: Speaking Fluency, Show and Tell, Classroom Action Research,
Secondary School.

This study aims to enhance the speaking fluency of secondary school
students at MA Mamba’us Sholihin Gresik by implementing the Show and Tell
technique. Recognizing that fluency is a crucial aspect of speaking ability,
especially in academic and formal contexts, this research responds to the
observed challenges of students’ low confidence and hesitation in speaking
English. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method
using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, consisting of two cycles with each
cycle including planning, acting, observing, and reflecting phases. The
participants were 30 male students of Class XII A. Data were collected through
observation, oral tests, and documentation, then analyzed using both qualitative
and quantitative approaches. Results from the first cycle revealed modest
improvement, with an average score of 60%, while the second cycle showed
significant progress, with scores increasing to 81%. The findings indicate that
the Show and Tell technique effectively promotes students’ speaking fluency,
confidence, and engagement. Therefore, this technique can be considered a
valuable strategy for improving English-speaking skills in secondary school
settings, particularly within the context of Islamic boarding schools.
