Reading comprehension is a crucial skill that significantly influences
students' academic performance. However, many students struggle to understand
texts, which hampers their learning process. One cooperative learning method
believed to enhance reading comprehension is the Team Games Tournament
(TGT). This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the TGT method in
improving the reading comprehension of Grade 6 students at MI Quran Lamongan
in narrative texts. Through this approach, students engage in competitive yet
collaborative group-based games, which are expected to enhance their motivation
and learning outcomes.
This research employs quantitative method by a pre-experimental design
with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. A total of 21 Grade 6 students
from MI Quran Lamongan participated in this study. Data were collected through
reading tests before and after implementing the TGT method. A paired sample t�test was conducted to determine significant differences between pre-test and post�test results.
The findings indicate a significant improvement in students' reading
comprehension scores after implementing the TGT method. The average pre-test
score was 55.24, which increased to 84.76 in the post-test. Statistical analysis
revealed a t-value of 10.234 and a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming the
effectiveness of the TGT method in enhancing reading comprehension.
Additionally, this method fostered student engagement, motivation, and
participation in the learning process. Based on these findings, the TGT method is
recommended as an effective cooperative learning strategy to improve students'
reading skills. Further research is suggested to explore the long-term impact of this
method and its application in different educational contexts.
