Abstract

Keywords: English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Contextual Approach,
Coursebook Development, and Conversation skills.

This thesis investigates the development of a supplementary English coursebook
focused on enhancing conversational skills through a contextual approach for
English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The study employs a Research and
Development (R&D) methodology, specifically utilizing the ADDIE model,
which encompasses analysis, design, development, implementation, and
evaluation phases.
Data collection methods include observations, interviews, and questionnaires
administered to students and teachers. The findings reveal that many students find
existing materials irrelevant to their daily lives, leading to disengagement and a
lack of motivation. The findings highlight the importance of integrating authentic
materials and real-world contexts into language learning, which increases student
interest and improves their speaking abilities and overall language proficiency.
The research concludes with recommendations for educators to adapt teaching
strategies and materials to better meet learners' diverse needs, ultimately fostering
a more dynamic and effective learning environment.
