Abstract

Key word: Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD), Teaching Grammar

Although the mastery of grammar is an important aspect in learning
English, it is important because grammar is the basis for constructing correct and
meaningful sentences. However, many students still have difficulties in
understanding grammar concepts because it is considered difficult, boring, less
applicable, and traditional teacher-centred learning methods, which often lack
student engagement and interaction. So, it makes the students have low
competence in using English appropriately. Therefore, to solve this problem, this
study explores the effectiveness of the Student Teams Achievement Division
(STAD) on teaching grammar. Moreover, this study aims to know whether
Students Teams Achievement Division (STAD) has an effect on teaching
grammar.
This study used a quantitative research method with a pre-experimental
design with the kind one-group pre-test and post-test design. This study was
conducted at Mambaus Sholihin course that involved X IPK 7 students, which
consists of 30 students selected through purposive sampling. The instrument used
was a grammar test that included simple past tense and past continuous tense
material, administered before and after the treatment. Then, the data were
analyzed quantitatively by using IBM SPSS v 20
The findings showed a significant increase in the students' average score,
from 50.97 in the pre-test to 75.40 in the post-test. Moreover, based on the paired
sample t-test, the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05, which means
there is a significant effect of using Student Teams Achievement Division
(STAD) on teaching grammar. Thus, it can be concluded that Student Teams
Achievement Division (STAD) is an effective method to be applied in teaching
grammar at 10th grade of Mambaus Sholihin course.
