Abstract

Keywords: Speaking Skills, Storytelling Techniques

This study aims to improve EFL learners' speaking ability through the use of storytelling techniques. The storytelling technique has influence and benefits on students' speaking fluency. The subjects consisted of 23 EFL learners at MTs Al-Hidayah. The method used in this study is a pre-experimental quantitative approach using one group pre-test and post-test design. In other words, the methods and instruments used were numerical calculations and statistical quantification. The sample for this study was eighth grade students totalling 23 students. The results showed that eighth grade students at MTs Al-Hidayah had very low speaking ability. However, after being given the treatment, their speaking ability improved significantly. This is evidenced by the average score results.

The author chose this method because she wanted to know the effectiveness of storytelling learning technique in improving students' speaking ability. The data shows that the average score of the pre-test is (49), while the average score of the post-test is (72.86). Meanwhile, the tcount value is greater than the ttable value. (11.374 > 2.07), it can be concluded that students‘ speaking ability can be improved by using storytelling technique and also the use of storytelling technique is effective to improve students’ speaking ability. (11.374 > 2,07). This shows that the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
