Abstract

The use of technology in education is increasingly becoming the main focus for increasing the effectiveness of learning, especially in developing students' language skills. One app that has gained popularity is Duolingo, an interactive and easy-to-use language learning platform. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using the Duolingo application in teaching students vocabulary in language learning.
This research method is a quantitative method, pre-experiment with a one group pre-test post-test design. The population of this study were seventh grade students at Islamic Qon GKB Gresik Middle School. The sample consisted of 29 students from class VII D as the experimental class. The experimental class was taught using the Duolingo application. The instrument used in this research is a multiple choice test for pre-test and post-test. the data obtained were analysed by using t-test in SPSS 23 with 5% (0.05) significance level.
Based on the t-test, it was obtained the t value of 7,204. The value of t-table with df 28 at the 5% significance level is 1,701 Therefore t count > t table ( 7,204 >1,701) and the significance value is smaller than 0,05 ( 0.00 < 0,05). So, the nul hypothesis ( H0 ) was rejected and the Alternative hypothesis ( Ha )was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect on teaching vocabulary by using Duolingo application at 7th D grade of SMP Islamic Qon GKB Gresik 2023/2024.
