Abstract

Nowadays, reading activities are very important, especially in education. In addition, education in this century involves critical and creative thinking, problem solving, communication, teamwork and literacy competencies. However, research conducted by the 2021 National Assessment shows that there are only 6.06% of students in Indonesia who have sufficient reading skills. On the other hand, some studies found that students still have difficulty in understanding the content of a reading passage if it happens because of uninteresting learning materials and boring learning models. In this case, the researcher wants to use the RAFT strategy which shows positive results after applying it. So that the problems found by researchers include: 1). Is there an effect of the RAFT strategy on students' critical and creative reading? 2). How far is the level of effectiveness of using the RAFT strategy?
This study uses a Quantitative methode with the type of pre-experiment research. Data collection techniques through the results of the average pre-test and post-test score. The collected data were analysed through normality test, Wilcoxon test, and N-Gain test. While the instrument test includes instrument validiy and realibility test.
The results of study on the RAFT strategy to improve critical and creative reading at Madrasa Aliyah Pondok Pesantren Mambaus Sholihin showed that the average pre test value was 42.78 and the post test value was 76.59. This shows a significant change after getting treatment using the RAFT strategy. To determine the research hypothesis, Wilcoxon test will be used in this study. The results showed that the positive rank value was 19.00 and the negative ranks was 0.00. This indicates that there is a significant difference. In addition, the value of Asymp, Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.00. This proves that the significance value is less than 0.05. so it can be stated that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. On the other hand, the results of the N-Gain test calculation also showed a figure of 60.17%. According to Hake's representative table, it shows that the implementation of the RAFT strategy is "Quite Effective".
