Abstract

The oldest Indonesian education school, pesantren, have historically included
English as a foreign language (EFL) as a compulsory subject in their curriculum.
Teachers rely on learning resources like textbooks and course books to guide
instruction and achieve material objectives. Regular evaluation of teaching materials is
crucial to ensure they are effective and align with students' needs and expectations.
This study aims to address this gap by examining the perceptions of teachers and
students at Mamba'us Sholihin Senior High School. In this study, researcher used
qualitative research approach and field research as the research design where the
research site was located at Mambaus Sholihin Islamic boarding school Suci, Manyar,
Gresik. Researcher analyzed the data transcripts from interviews conducted to teachers
and students. Based on interview result toward teachers and students, the study found
that Mambaus Sholiohin English course book is adequate, but it still has shortcomings
such as typing errors, less relevant content toward students need in their daily activity,
instructions that are difficult for the teacher to understand, difficult vocabularies and
less clear image media display. The study suggests that Mambaus Sholihin English
course book needs revisions to address these shortcomings and improve the learning
experience for students. The addition of teacher guide book would also help teachers
in understanding the instruction explained in the book, so that teachers can conduct the
material more easily and efficiently
