Abstract

Key Word: Narrative Text, Vocabulary Size. Writing,

Vocabulary is one of the important aspects in language skills, especially in
writing. In the context of learning English as a foreign language (EFL), the ability
to write narrative text is one of the competencies that students must master.
However, the low vocabulary possessed by students often becomes an obstacle in
conveying ideas effectively and variedly in their writing. Based on these problems,
this study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between vocabulary size
and the ability to write narrative texts of grade X students at MA Mambaus Sholihin
Gresik.
This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The
research sample amounted to 139 students selected through purposive sampling
technique. The instruments used were a multiple choice vocabulary size test of 50
questions and a narrative text writing test based on folklore topics. The data were
analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation test with the help of SPSS
version 22.
The results showed that there was a very strong positive correlation between
vocabulary size and students' narrative text writing ability, with a correlation
coefficient of 0.845 and a significance of 0.000 (p < 0.05). This finding shows that
the larger the size of students' vocabulary, the better their ability to write narrative
texts.
Based on these results, it can be concluded that vocabulary size plays an
important role in supporting students' writing skills. Therefore, vocabulary
development should be an integral part of the English writing learning process,
especially in narrative text types.
