Abstract

Strategy.
This study aims to develop English reading materials based on a metacognitive reading strategy for the ninth-grade students of MTs Negeri 1Tuban. This study was conducted to solve the problem faced by the ninth-grade students of MTs Negeri 1 Tuban in reading interest and how to develop reading materials for the ninth- grade students of MTs Negeri 1Tuban.
The research design uses Research and Development (R&D). The results of this research will produce a supplementary reading book product. using the Tomlinson procedure which has six steps: 1) need analysis, 2) material development, 3) expert validation, 4) try out, 5) revision, 6) final product. The subjects of this research were class IX learners at MTs Negeri 1 Tuban for the 2023/2024 academic year, consisting of 32 learners. The final product of this study is the textbook of Reading material which focuses on increasing students’ reading skills; this reading material is developed based on the students' needs and students’ interests. The title of the product is “Reading Jedi: reading it’s a jedi thing”. Two genres of text are narrative and report text.
The result of the research is that the developed supplementary reading material is effective in achieving its intended purpose of enhancing students' reading skills and comprehension in grade nine. By using metacognitive strategies, the students can improve their reading comprehension and their awareness of their own thinking processes during reading.
